Lenten Fasting and Abstinence Guidelines

Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are days of fasting and abstinence.

Fasting means one full meatless meal and two smaller meals without snacking between meals. This applies to Catholics ages 18–59.

Abstinence means no meat, including poultry. Catholics over the age of 14 observe abstinence on Ash Wednesday and all Fridays of Lent.

Those who are ill, pregnant, or have medical conditions are not obligated.
