Support for families impacted by immigration enforcement (PDF)

Inspired by the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord, the Diocese of San José invites our parish community to support neighbors who may be affected by immigration enforcement. These resources focus on practical help, verified information, and accompaniment rooted in faith and dignity.

Support through learning and accompaniment

Parishioners are invited to support families by participating in or hosting workshops on legal rights, responsibilities, and family preparedness. Catholic Charities of Santa Clara County offers Know-Your-Rights sessions and preparedness workshops to help families understand their options and plan ahead.

Parishes may also begin or participate in an accompaniment ministry by offering quiet, practical support such as transportation, childcare, meals, translation help, or regular check-ins with families who may be feeling afraid or isolated. Those interested in accompaniment training can enroll in the Hope and Healing workshop by contacting Ruby Ramirez at rubyramirez@pactsj.org.

Parishes are encouraged to maintain a referral list of trusted nonprofit and legal service providers, including multilingual options, and make this information available at the parish office and on the parish website.

Emergency assistance and legal support

Families can face a sudden loss of income when a loved one is detained. Donations help provide emergency assistance and connect families to trusted legal support through Catholic Charities of Santa Clara County.

If you are worried or something is happening

Get verified help right away. To report ICE activity or request accompaniment, call the Santa Clara County Rapid Response Network (RRN). The network operates 24/7 and can help verify what is happening and connect you with local support.

Know your rights

  • You may ask, “Am I free to go?”
  • You have the right to remain silent.
  • Do not sign papers you do not understand.
  • If someone comes to your door, you may ask to see a warrant.

Make a simple family plan

If your family could be affected, make a basic plan now. This can include childcare pickup arrangements, emergency contacts, important documents, and a trusted person who can help if needed.
